As daylight begins to fade into a soft twilight, there comes a certain magic to the Forest. Cross the road and you are in a world of golden light and illuminating the deep yellow flowers of the gorse. Head South and you will come across a little valley called Deadman's Bottom, a serene spot teeming with wildlife and where a gutter runs along most of the year unless very dry. With the gentle murmurs of the water cascading to the pond and the golden light on the hillside, the area becomes a hub of activity for local fauna as the day winds down.

The Allure of an Evening Stroll

Evening strolls are not merely about the destination; they're about the experience. Breathing in the cooling air, feeling the subtle shift of the day's warmth, and witnessing nature transition into night creates a refreshing cocktail of serenity and wonder.

The path meanders gracefully through heather, bracken and gorse, along the stream. It's a perfect way to unwind at the end of the day, offering a pleasant reprieve from the everyday hustle.

Newts and Tadpoles in the Pond

If you are fortunate you may discover large colonies of small black tadpoles with their wriggling tails. We were also surprised to encounter another creature we hadn't seen before, the common newt. Observing these fascinating creatures is truly a delight.

It's a vivid reminder of life's cycles and the delicate balance of ecosystems. Slowing down to appreciate these small wonders can turn an ordinary walk into an extraordinary nature lesson.

Watching Stags Graze

As the path winds its way further down the valley away from the pond towards Godshill, you may encounter stags peacefully grazing in the distance. These majestic creatures can often be seen silhouetted against the backdrop of the fading sun, providing a picturesque moment that captures the essence of nature's beauty.

Stags possess a grace and tranquillity, embodying the peaceful atmosphere of Deadman's Bottom. Observing them from a distance, you can take in their antlers which seem to reach towards the sky, adding to their majestic stature.

Gorse in Bloom

As you continue your evening stroll, you’ll undoubtedly come across clusters of gorse flowering vibrantly amid the lush green surroundings. The bright yellow blooms are not just visually stunning; they serve as a valuable habitat for a variety of insects.

Gorse plays a vital role in the local ecosystem, thriving in various conditions which can attract pollinators and other wildlife. The sight of these flowers adds a splash of color and cheerfulness to the landscape, making your evening walk a feast for the eyes.

Taking a moment to appreciate these flowers can bring a sense of peace and contentment. The gentle fragrance wafts through the air, enhancing the overall experience, making each step feel more rejuvenating.
